Unity of the Spirit in the Bond of Peace

Ausbund, 119

Let us sing from the heart about unity and peace! Let us pursue it with great determination and zeal! Lord, you want us to become perfectly united in your covenant, reigning with you in the Father’s kingdom, and living forever with you.

Wonderful unity, peace, and joy abound in the Father’s kingdom. But those that would live in such pleasures forever must begin to live in them already at this time. The Father’s will, done in heaven, must be done already on earth. The flesh must already die, the old leaven be scrubbed out, and the virtues of Christ planted in.

We must learn from Christ. He did not come to be served but to serve others. Driven by love he gave his life for the salvation of others.

What humility! What lowliness, stooping so far as to wash his disciples’ feet! Following Christ is to give our life like that for others. It is to love in deeds, not only in words.

It is to share our belongings with those in need, to seek the good of others before our own, and to make ourselves equal to the poor, like Christ the heavenly Son of God made himself equal to us.

Let love in purity never grow cold among us! Members of the same body, let us strive to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Love is the first commandment. Love fulfils the law. Though we did great things for God, without love they are nothing.

Lord, keep our hearts in love!
