Run After Christ –

Lieder der Hutterischen Brüder, 285

Does the way to God attract you? Would you like to live in his love and blessing? Let go of your ideas!

Take your understanding captive, say no to yourself, hate your old way of life, and do not trust the world, possessions, or prestige.

Even though the desires of the flesh spring up thick and healthy, do not let them grow. Chop them down. Drag your flesh onto the narrow way.

Even though it rebels, force it to carry the cross and submit itself to the Spirit.

Run after Christ with all the strength you have! Do not let him escape from your sight!

Desire him with everything inside you and follow him straight into humility and persecution. The world cannot stand the pious but do not let it deter you from Christ!

Follow him into Gethsemane—wherever he takes you—for you will triumph with Christ if you suffer hatred and persecution with joy.

With free hearts we long for your salvation Lord, and to dwell in your joyful community! No matter what we must suffer for you, no distress or need, not even death itself, will quench our zeal! Everything is trivial compared to the favour, grace, and love we receive from you. Let us therefore persist in God’s way! Let us spare no work, no effort to walk with him.

Wolfgang Sailer, ca. 1500-1550, Anabaptist leader at Auspitz, Moravia
